Your Greenhouse, Vegetables, and Fruit in Mid-Late September
Pot up a few brightly coloured polyanthus and place them in a frame or greenhouse for early flowering. Geraniums, fuchsias, begonias, heliotropes and tender subjects should now be in the greenhouse, and cyclamen and primulas brought in from the frame. Geranium and fuchsia cuttings must be examined regularly for grey mould and any sufferer dismissed.
Outside chrysanthemums should be housed without delay. Sweet peas under glass are something of a luxury. They should be sown in September, with 4 seeds to a 5 in. Pot, and when potted on in January they can be plunged up to the rim in the greenhouse border. A steady temperature of 17°C. (63°F.) should be maintained because a wide variation in temperature, even for an hour, might prove fatal.

Lettuce of a suitable variety can be grown in a frame for winter use, and successional sowings will keep the supply going.
This is one of the best months for ’spawning’ (sowing) mushrooms under cover, in a frame or shed. They will crop in about six weeks and follow on those grown outdoors.
A new bed of strawberries may be made this month. New, certified virus-free stock should be bought from a reputable source. Planting should be completed by the end of the month.
