How Do I Go About Starting An Organic Garden

1. Choosing the location.

It is vital that when choosing the location for your organic garden that it is in a place where it gets the sun for at least half of the day, but it also has easy access for watering. Also it is important that you make sure that the ground drains well or you may have to build raised bed gardens instead.

2. Removing the Weeds.

Now you have chosen the location for your organic garden you now need to mow, pull and dig out all the weeds that are there. Then you need to till the land (either by hand using a fork or by using a tiller, but this will depend on how big your garden is going to be). Then you need to remove any further debris by raking the soil over. Now you need to wait a few days and then remove any more weeds that sprout up.

3. Testing the Soil.

Before you begin planting you need to test the soil and then starting building it up using organic matter. You can add compost, bone meal or rock phosphate to the soil. But only add those that are of an organic nature. Also when sowing any plants you should add compost to it about 2 to 4 weeks prior to planting. This gives the compost time to integrate and stabilize itself within the soil.

4. Fertilizers

Now you can start to till and dig in fertilizers and leave it for about a month in order for the nutrients to take a hold.

5. Preparing a Compost Pile

When starting an organic garden it is a good idea to start your compost pile at the same time. You can place in it leaves, grass clippings (so every time you mow the lawn do not forget to add them to the pile), coffee grounds, eggshells and other organic kitchen waste (fruit and vegetable peelings etc). As it slowly breaks down the compost becomes a great organic fertilizer for your garden. So no longer will you need to search your local garden center for organic fertilizer, as you will always have some close at hand.

Now that we have shown you how to start an organic garden you can go and choose a spot in your garden and get started. Soon you will be on the way to producing all your own lovely organic products.

Must Have Equipment For Gardening

Many people take up gardening as a hobby because it helps you to relax and will help reduce the stress in your life. The rewards are great as you watch your harvest flourish right before your eyes.

To get the most out of your gardening time you will need some equipment for gardening to help make your hobby enjoyable and safe. Although your needs will probably be simple if you have the normal size city garden, the right equipment for gardening will make all the difference in the world.

The first thing you should probably do is to protect yourself. When you expose yourself to nature you may get some harsh results without proper protection. The weather is normally hot during the gardening season so you should make sure your head is protected with a good hat. This will keep the sun from your face and help protect you from sunburn.

You will want to invest in a pair of quality gardening gloves to protect yourself from sharp briars, fertilizers and bug bites. You can find gloves made especially for your gardening needs at your local department store or online if you prefer.

The clothes you wear while you are in your garden should be something you do not mind getting dirty or stained. You will be dealing with dirt; mud, spray chemicals and nature, so wear clothes that will take the heat.

If you choose to use spray pesticides a mask to wear while you are spraying your plants would be wise so you will not breath the fumes from your sprayer.

The size of your garden will determine what type of tools you will need to work your soil. A postage stamp garden will not need as much equipment as a large garden. No matter what size garden you decide to grow you will need items such as a shovel, rake, hoe and fork.

As your garden gets bigger so will your equipment needs. A tiller is a wonderful addition for most gardeners.

Do not forget the everyday common items most people tend to forget. You will need tomato cages or stakes, trellises for your climbing plants to grow on and do not forget the essential garden hose. There are many attachments available to water your plants with.

To enjoy your hobby to the fullest it is important to think about the equipment for gardening you will need before the gardening season begins. Take some time to make sure you are prepared and you should have a most wonderful gardening season.

Guidelines For Buying Used Greenhouses

Buying a used greenhouse is much cheaper than settling for a brand new unit. Naturally you want a product that is cheap, but there other factors you need to consider. This includes the unit’s size and heating system among other concerns.

Where to Buy

The best option is the Web. There are several auction sites and online classified ads you can browse. Look at the picture and read the product description. Check the size if it is apt for your needs. The seller should mention if there are any non working components or if some parts have been replaced.

Check the Panels

Panels can be made from various materials, but the best ones are constructed of plastic or Plexiglas. These are very effective in filtering UV rays.

Another nice feature of Plexiglas and plastic is their durability. This is important especially for a used structure. Avoid buying those with broken panels or those that have been repaired. They will not last for long.

The Heating System

The heating system is necessary if you want to raise your plants even during the offseason. Do not buy a unit with a malfunctioning heating system. The cost of repair will be high. There is also the possibility it will break down again.

There are many kinds of heating systems, but the solar powered ones are cost effective. A used greenhouse with solar powered heating systems may be more expensive than others, but it uses power efficiently. This will translate into savings down the road. The louvers will also be important for the plant ventilation.

Notes on the Materials

You can choose from wood, polyethylene, PVC, galvanized steel and many more. A veteran plant owner will tell you there is no single best material to use.

If you are buying a second hand unit, be certain the material is still solid. Seams or cracks in the material will shorten its lifespan considerably. If the material is wood, make sure it is high quality. Low quality wood has a tendency to weaken when exposed to weather changes.

Steel and Aluminum Frames

Galvanized steel frames are very strong. They are also cheap. Before you buy, ask the seller if it is galvanized heavy duty or stainless tubing. Either of the two will make the frames more suitable for outdoor use.

Aluminum frames are also quite strong. These are often combined with polycarbonate and anodized. A used unit with aluminum frames may cost more than those with steel frames. However, it is very durable. Unlike other materials, aluminum and stainless steel are not susceptible to rust and corrosion.

Plastic Frames

Plastic frames are the choice of hobbyists. They are cheap, easy to set up and can be carried easily. The heat loss is also lower compared with other more expensive materials. While some plastics weaken with exposure to ultraviolet rays, some have protective coating.

Buying a used greenhouse requires a lot of preparation and planning. You need to take into account the specific features of the unit and its condition. This ensures you will get the most value from your money.
